The starter’s gun has fired on arguments about Olympic cost blowouts, with official documents showing Queensland’s original $4.45 billion price tag to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games has already shot up more than $1.35 billion and is likely to climb further in the next 11 years.
The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) own assessment of hosting the games – revealed in documents published this week – puts the cost of hosting the games at $US4.5 billion, or $5.8 billion, an increase of more than 30 per cent in simple terms.
