A top Victorian tourism bureaucrat says axing the 2026 Commonwealth Games did not damage the state’s reputation for hosting major events and in fact boosted travellers’ interest in the state.
Separately, a top Treasury official revealed that a costings report the then-Andrews government relied on to budget for the event was “effectively a desktop analysis” based on the cost of the 2018 Gold Coast Games, plus inflation.
