The staff and supply Grinches that could steal Christmas

Retailers are still hoping for a strong Christmas, despite cost-of-living pressures, but labour and transport shortages threaten to crimp sales.

December is no longer the biggest-spending month of the year, because of the growing popularity of Black Friday and Cyber Monday promotions in November.

But Christmas remains the most important event in the retail calendar, generating as much as two-thirds of profits for many retailers, and those who fail to deliver know they will pay the price in missed sales, mountains of unsold stock and weak margins.
