The first rule of political fundraising is you don’t talk about political fundraising. Or so quips one former senior politician when politely declining to comment for this piece.

Fundraising greases the wheels of democracy, and is, with an election in sight, what the nation’s leading politicians are doing two or three nights a week. It seems only right to ponder what exactly it involves. And if politicians are reluctant to draw back the curtain, other fundraising circuit regulars are happy to oblige.
