Netflix threat pushed Nine, Fairfax into ‘slick’ deal

The stage is set for the launch of subscription video-on-demand services in Australia – but it took a near marriage of rivals Nine Entertainment and Seven West to get there, as they looked to join forces against overseas streaming giants.

Staunch free-to-air rivals Nine Entertainment Co Holdings and Seven West Media began talks about forming a ­subscription video-on-demand service in October 2013.

Most Australian media companies regularly water down such informal talks, saying that “everybody is talking to everybody". But the two networks came surprisingly close to putting years of competition and rancour aside to form a partnership, as overseas streaming giants such as Netflix and Hulu ­circled Australian shores.
