Sims says ‘high cost’ Australia-made fixation threatens green steel

The federal government’s “Made in Australia” industry policy threatens to destroy the country’s chance at making “green” steel and worsen inflation by exacerbating existing labour shortages, economist Rod Sims ha warned.

The former competition watchdog said the “slogan” policy could increase the cost of renewable power if the country found itself unable to buy cheap equipment from the likes of China, eroding its bid to become an exporter of energy-intensive green products.
