Rio Tinto takes ‘first step’ towards Panguna fix

Rio Tinto has moved to stem the reputational damage caused by its previous involvement in the Panguna copper mine, after agreeing with nearby communities and human rights groups to investigate the environmental state and social impact of the abandoned mine.
Rio employees have not set foot at the mine since 1989 when the company’s antecedents evacuated staff amid a civil war in the Bougainville region of Papua New Guinea.
