Coal miner Peabody Energy is expecting at least three months of disruption to its Queensland coal operations amid signs of an underground fire at its North Goonyella mine.

Unsafe levels of gas and excessive heat inside the mine were revealed by The Australian Financial Review on September 19, but were played down by Peabody management at the time, who said the problem appeared to be past its peak.
