NSW deputy premier stops short of backing BHP’s early coal closure

NSW Deputy Premier and resources minister Paul Toole has stopped short of endorsing BHP’s plan to keep huge volumes of the state’s coal in the ground through an earlier closure of Australia’s biggest thermal coal mine.
BHP last year asked the NSW government for permission to extend the life of the Mount Arthur mine in the Hunter Valley to 2045, but in June BHP scaled back that request to 2030.
