The annual migration of fund managers into Western Australia is marked each March by a flock of chartered seaplanes settling in the turquoise waters of Rottnest Island’s Thomson Bay.

For the past 25 years, hundreds of investors and executives have swapped their suits for shorts and sidestepped quokkas at the Rotto conference, ostensibly to discuss how the state’s business opportunities – predominantly mining-related – can make their companies and clients wealthier.
