When the London Metal Exchange rejected calls for a separate pricing index for nickel produced with superior environmental and ethical standards this week, it was a setback with a silver lining for Australian miners.

Resources Minister Madeleine King, BHP chief Mike Henry and Andrew Forrest’s Wyloo Metals have all been banging the drum in pursuit of a “green premium” that would distinguish their Australian products from Indonesian rivals.
