Anglo disputes evidence it prioritised emissions targets over safety

Anglo American limited the amount of flammable gas it removed from an underground coal mine in Queensland in the weeks before it exploded out of a desire to comply with greenhouse gas emission targets, according to internal emails that the mining giant has contested.

The emails were sent in the days before Anglo’s Grosvenor coking coal mine suffered a massive explosion in May 2020 that severely injured five workers and is now the subject of an inquiry in Queensland.
