Rugby Australia has torn up Israel Folau's $4 million contract, setting up a  likely showdown in the courts with the high-profile star player.

Rugby Australia chief executive Raelene Castle said the sporting body was left with no choice after Mr Folau's social media posts directly contravened its own values.
