Pell stories aimed to dispel conspiracy theories, court told

A former editor of The Age said the decision to publish articles in the newspaper, as well as its sister publication, The Sydney Morning Herald, regarding a suppression order over George Pell was about serving readers, dispelling conspiracy theories and explaining why it couldn’t write about his now-quashed conviction.

Alex Lavelle, who left The Age mid-2020, testified at the contempt of court trial in Victoria’s Supreme Court on Thursday involving journalists across major Australian media organisations and their reporting of Cardinal Pell’s conviction on child abuse charges in December 2018.
