Forget the lip service: it's time Google and Facebook paid for news

Foreign digital giants have no right to be the judge, jury and executioner of local news.

They're the hugely powerful gatekeepers of the internet and they're happy to vacuum up the lion's share of digital advertising revenue across the world – just don't ask them to take responsibility for it.

That might be fine if the digital giants Google and Facebook actually created journalism and replaced the media businesses they've disrupted.
