Shoppers’ anger makes ‘Colesworth’ the word of the year
It’s the supermarket giants’ torrid year summarised in just one word: Colesworth. The portmanteau of Coles and Woolworths is the word of the year, according to language Australian National University researchers who track what has gained prominence over 12 months.
The self-described “word nerds” at the university’s National Dictionary Centre help edit Oxford’s Australian dictionaries. Each year, they compile a shortlist of words that have grown in use for whatever reason.
