Whyalla steelworks halted, millions in capex urgently needed

Steel making will temporarily stop at the Whyalla steelworks after a specialist team of engineers from rival steel maker BlueScope advised administrator KordaMentha that urgent capital spending was needed.

The shutdown of the blast furnace will last for two days and begins on Wednesday. It underlines the uphill battle faced by KordaMentha in stabilising the plant and enticing a new buyer for a business that has been starved of investment under the ownership of British industrialist Sanjeev Gupta.
