Live exporter tells farmers to take cheaper price to save the trade

Live exporter Wellard has urged farmers to accept lower prices and protect the trade from sinking under the weight of animal welfare scandals, as the company struggles to pay down debt and overcome breaches of its banking covenants.

The only ASX-listed group focused on live export suggested farmers should take a lower price for their cattle and sheep to protect the industry from private operators of poorly equipped, ageing vessels that sometimes failed to even pay their foreign crews.
