Australia must overcome these challenges to meet its net zero targets

A massively complex and expensive task is ahead for Australia to decarbonise its power supply. To start, it will take a lot of building.

Australia is famous for being “a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains”. And while those are the very things that make it ideal for wind and solar generation, they are also making it difficult to set up the infrastructure needed for renewable energy generation.

The sheer size of the country and the distribution of desirable renewable energy sites compared to population centres make developing generation and transmission sites both time-consuming and expensive compared to much of Europe and Asia.
