In Kerby Bowden’s 29 years she has rarely smiled. On her wedding day, standing in her Demetrios strapless tulle gown next to her boyfriend under the gigantic fig trees at Tocal ­Homestead, she was bursting with happiness but ashamed to show her crooked and discoloured teeth.

Yet since mid-November the aged care nurse from Rutherford in the Hunter Valley can’t stop smiling – even in her sleep, according to her husband.
