The Star told high roller to use controversial China Union Pay card: inquiry

Sydney’s Star casino gave a high roller, who is being pursued by the Australian Taxation Office, a $5 million line of gambling credit in exchange for a blank cheque, and encouraged him to pay off his losses with the China Union Pay debit card scheme, an inquiry into the gambling giant has heard.

The inquiry was told Star allowed the high roller and billionaire property developer Phillip Dong Fang Lee to repay debt with the CUP cards, which can allegedly be used to flout Beijing’s strict capital controls and Australian anti-money laundering laws.
