Former Star boss says he was told not to worry about crime gang links

Star Entertainment’s former chief executive says he was praised by regulators and told not to worry about a major client who had considerable ties to criminal organisations in a broad defence of conduct that ultimately led to intense scrutiny and financial pressure on the casino operator.

Matt Bekier was appointed chief executive of Star, then known as Echo Entertainment, in 2014 and quit eight years later after an inquiry heard the company had repeatedly and deliberately flouted rules aimed at preventing money laundering through the casino’s high-roller rooms.
