Why Rothery is ‘pound for pound Australia’s smartest banker’

Goldman Sachs local chief Simon Rothery remains relatively unknown and doesn’t even have a LinkedIn account, but he’s a survivor. Just ask his tennis partner.

In between meetings a few years ago in Singapore, Simon Rothery and Josh Frydenberg played their first – and only – tennis match. They borrowed hotel racquets and went head-to-head on one of the two Shangri-La courts near Orchard Road.

Both men were more than casual social players. Frydenberg, 53, took a gap year after school to play tennis full-time in Australia and Europe, competing against Mark Philippoussis and Pat Rafter, and representing Australia at two World University Games. Rothery, 55, worked as a tennis coach throughout university, after competing at a national level during school, where he played Todd Woodbridge and Jason Stoltenberg on the circuit.
