Why grizzled retail bankers are back in vogue

As the economy veers towards recession, there's a new-found veneration for bankers who've survived – and learnt from – previous downturns.

Don't bother bragging about that expensive MBA you picked up from a prestigious US university. And bury the reference to the years you spent as a management consultant at the bottom of your CV.

If you want to snare a top job in banking these days, you've got to highlight the unglamorous decades you spent working your way up through the bank's labyrinthine management structure until you finally reached the executive ranks.
