S&P flags more mutual bank mergers

There will be more mutual bank mergers, as sub-scale lenders scramble to create scale to allow them to boost technology investment and fend off margin pressure from low interest rates and high compliance costs, S&P Global Ratings says.

The ratings agency issued a report on the mutual bank sector highlighting its struggle to remain competitive, and said mergers and acquisitions will remain a prominent theme as small banks try to avoid their products losing appeal with members.
