James Mawhinney’s surveillance game of cat and mouse

While the Financial Review was following James Mawhinney’s investment schemes, it turns out he was trying to follow us.

On a cold July evening in 2021 in the early stages of the second lockdown, I got a call from my colleague, Jemima Whyte, who insisted we meet in person as soon as possible.

“This might be one cracking story,” I thought. When she arrived at the street beneath my apartment and held up a piece of paper that read “turn your phone off” I got even more excited.
