Inside Virgin’s big day, in the shadow of war and trepidatious markets

The ringing of the bell often has a forced air of celebration. On this occasion, it was genuine relief, after a restless night for Virgin Australia’s executives and advisers as the missiles flew between Iran and Israel.

Would the long-awaited listing take off? Without a hitch, it seems. And there were plenty there to see it, with Virgin pulling out more bells and whistles than most. Dozens of red-suited flight attendants lined up in pairs to greet guests, a red neon sign with the airline’s slogan, and a room crammed with luggage handlers, accountants, pilots, flight attendants – and bankers.
