Insurance Australia Group says it is almost certain to blow its annual allowance for extreme weather events after this week's destructive hailstorms forced it to slash its earnings guidance for the financial year.

It will be the 12th year out of the past 15 that IAG has failed to put aside adequate reserves to fund the cost of extreme weather events.
