Winter gas threat pushed out but shortages loom

Southern Australia has been warned of natural gas shortfalls by 2028 – three years later than earlier forecast – and annual shortages from 2029 onwards unless investment flows into import terminals, pipelines and new fields.

The energy market regulator’s latest advice slightly eased the urgency of the gas crisis enveloping the south-eastern states, where the threat of insufficient supply that would send business and household energy bills soaring looms.
