Big industrial producers such as metal refineries and smelters would not be adequately protected from overseas competition under the Albanese government’s changes to the safeguard mechanism, according to the industry.

While Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen is keen to push through changes to the scheme affecting 215 big polluters by the middle of the year, big energy users and industrial polluters are still unhappy with key parts of the reform.
