NSW cracks down on coal, CSG licensing

All new coal and coal seam gas mining licence applications in NSW will be subject to tough new rules once the 60-day moratorium on new licences ends on Saturday as the state government attempts to head off an escalating conflict between farmers, miners and conservationists over land use.

The rules, announced on Thursday by NSW Resources and Energy Minister Chris Hartcher, include a ban on the use of so-called BTEX chemicals in coal seam gas drilling and an extended moratorium on the technique of hydraulic fracturing, known as fraccing.
