Australian Energy Regulator chairwoman Clare Savage says retailers will be able to recoup their costs through this year’s default market offer, and at the same time provide discount deals to consumers.

As regulators this week gave preliminary approval for electricity price rises of up to 30 per cent in the eastern states, small retailers said it might not be enough to cover losses from a big spike in wholesale prices in the past year.
