The federal government is pushing for expansions of coal mines to keep people in work amid expectations that hundreds of thousands of people will lose their jobs due to the economic slump caused by COVID-19.
Economists have forecast that up to 750,000 people could lose paid work over the next two years as companies slash jobs. They also warned that people will drop out of the workforce because they fall ill, go into quarantine or to care for their families.
