Basslink U-turn puts faith in long-term power price benefits

Homes and businesses in Victoria and Tasmania will benefit more down the track from the open flow of electricity across an underwater cable between the two states despite paying higher prices in the shorter term, the energy regulator has decided in a rare U-turn from its original position.

The ruling to allow the 370-kilometre heavy-duty cable to be converted into a regulated asset will impose extra transmission charges for consumers, with large industrial energy users expected to be most affected.
