The net zero dilemma for Australian farmers

Some in the National Party want agriculture excluded from a national net zero target. But New Zealand’s farmers say special treatment isn’t a fix.

Agriculture in Australia, particularly cattle herds, are responsible for about 14 per cent of the country’s greenhouse gas emissions; in neighbouring New Zealand the proportion is as high as 50 per cent.  

Australian farmers found themselves in the middle of the climate wars this week as politicians started sniping over whether agriculture should be carved out of any net zero emissions target set by the Coalition government.

Industry bodies are already on board with their own net zero targets, highlighting the growing gap between the position of many farmers, and the National Party that represents them in Parliament.
