Why Nvidia’s plunge has global markets on edge

A historic fall in the chipmaker’s shares was followed by news it is in the sights of competition regulators. Nervous investors are looking over their shoulders.

Hendrik du Toit, the founder and chief executive of the $250 billion asset manager Ninety One, can understand why investors have herded into the US sharemarket, the magnificent seven tech stocks particularly.

US dominance of capital markets is at a peak, and the nation’s policymakers are “favouring their own”. Throw in geopolitical uncertainty, and the response by investors is logical.
