The buy and sell cycle chewing up ASX companies and their investors

Companies get hoodwinked into thinking selling assets and returning capital via buybacks and dividends can make up for past sins.

Companies deal their way into problems all the time – then they try to deal their way out.

The problem is, it rarely works. They buy something questionable, sell something solid often to pay down debt, and somehow hope that being more focused on a questionable and lower-quality business makes them more attractive to investors. It just doesn’t work.
