Fund manager John Abernethy has blown the whistle on the growing gap between the gloom and doom scenarios issued by economists and the bullish behaviour of consumers.

After two days of record half year sales and profit numbers being released by Super Retail Group and JB Hi-FI, Abernethy is questioning whether economists and highly paid chief executives are too far removed from the women and men in the street.
