Don’t be fooled by the sudden burst of tariff bullishness

The outbreak of hope that greeted Donald Trump’s announcement that he may give “a lot of countries breaks” on the levies looks to be built on shifting sands.

American exceptionalism is back – for a few days at least.

The US dollar rose on Monday night. The benchmark 10-year US bond yield fell. The S&P 500 rose 1.4 per cent, and has now risen 2.5 per cent over the two trading days. The correction that shook global markets still looms large in the rearview mirror. But at least we’re back to basically flat since election day in early November.
