Bitcoin’s bear market is a fresh test for institutional investors

Bitcoin’s surge following Donald Trump’s election looks to be coming to an end, just as big investors finally step into the sector.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this.

When Donald Trump swept to power in November, cryptocurrency markets surged as investors bet the president-elect would make good on his promise to make the United States the undisputed king of the crypto world. The sector would be deregulated, the US would purchase a strategic reserve of bitcoin, and the financial regulators who had so harshly treated the sector would be turfed from office.
