No wonder rag trader Solomon Lew fought so hard to take control of clothing retailer Just Group through a bitterly contested $800 million bid in 2008.

The unpolished jewel in Just Group's crown was not namesake retailer Just Jeans or quirky fashion label Dotti but emerging stationery brand Smiggle, which Just Group had acquired for $29 million 12 months earlier.
