A Sturt resident has executed a citizen’s arrest in the middle of the night when he found an intruder rifling through his home.

Just after 3am Thursday, police were called to the property in Carlow St after the occupants disturbed a man inside their house.

The suspect was held by one of the male occupants until police arrived a short time later.

While at the cells, police located a number of personal cards including a driver’s licence which had allegedly been stolen from a car parked in the driveway of a house in Parson St.

The 18-year-old Dover Gardens man was charged with aggravated serious criminal trespass, illegal interference and theft.

The eldest son of the family of five said the that his mother and father have been left “shocked” by the confronting experience, but thankfully his younger brothers, one only six years old, were not disturbed.

“At first my mum thought it was my younger brother going to work,” he explained.

“She approached him and asked him what he was doing here.

“My dad tackled the guy and called the cops.

“Thankfully my youngest brother didn’t wake up, so he won’t have any bad memories.”

Francis a mother of a local resident, said that this is not the first incidents have occurred in the area.

“One time she (her daughter) went out to her car to go to work, and there was a tomahawk smashed through her window,” she said.

Chloe, a young mother on the street, said that she feels “uneasy” knowing that these kinds of activities keep happening so close to her home.

“With the housing trust down the street, you always hear people yelling and screaming,” she said.

“It makes you feel uneasy, but it’s not too surprising.

“We always make sure our doors are locked, and we have a very big staghound cross wolfhound out the back who keeps us safe.”

The suspect was refused bail and will appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court later today.
