Public memorial for late cyclist Melissa Hoskins expected to draw in hundreds of attendees

A memorial on Saturday for late cyclist Melissa Hoskins will be a celebration of life, with hundreds expected to turn out including husband Rohan Dennis.

Hundreds of mourners are expected to turn out for Melissa Hoskins’ public memorial this Saturday.

The cyclist’s family from Perth - parents Peter and Amanda as well as sister Jess - will fly in for the memorial, with father Peter expected to speak at the service in Adelaide Town Hall.

The cyclist’s two young children are expected to attend with father and husband of the victim Rohan Dennis, who will appear at but not participate in the service.

Hoskins was killed last December after being hit by a ute, alleged to have been driven by husband Dennis outside their Medindie home.

Dennis made an unexpected appearance last month when he attended Hoskins’ funeral in Perth.

Hoskins’ family have said they want the memorial to be a joyful celebration of the cyclist’s life and achievements, before and after cycling.

A number of Hoskins’ cycling teammates, mentors and around 100 guests have been invited to attend.

The memorial is open to the public and will be livestreamed on the Cycling Australia Facebook page.

The memorial will start from 4.30pm and will be held in the auditorium at Adelaide Town Hall this Saturday, February 24.

What we know about Hoskins death

Both Hoskins and Dennis are former Olympians and gold medallists, who were considered the golden couple of the cycling world.

The couple lived with their two young children in a $2.45m property in the affluent suburb of Medindie.

On December 30 at around 8pm, emergency services were called to their street after a 32-year-old woman was reported as injured following a vehicle crash.

She was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital and died a few hours later from her injuries.

Details emerged following her death that the couple was in fact Hoskins and Dennis.

South Australian Police allege Mr Dennis was behind the wheel of the ute at the time and he has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

He was released on bail to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.
