Aleksandra Vergulis, 51, and daughter Daniela Vergulis, 22, allegedly shot in Campbelltown

The two women shot – one fatally, while the other fights for life in hospital – in Adelaide’s east have been identified as a mother and daughter.

Aleksandra Vergulis, 51, died after allegedly being shot in the driveway of her Campbelltown home by a 51-year-old man on Saturday afternoon.

Her daughter Daniela Vergulis, 22, was allegedly shot by the man and suffered serious injuries before being taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, where she remains.

Ms Vergulis worked as an executive assistant at the University of South Australia, in the Education Futures unit.

The university did not comment on Ms Vergulis’ death on Sunday.

According to a LinkedIn profile, Ms Vergulis previously worked as a procurement officer at the Defence Department.

According to LinkedIn, Daniela works as a legal secretary in the civil litigation department of the Crown Solicitor’s Office and graduated from UniSA in 2022 with a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Bachelor of Psychological Science.

According to her LinkedIn, she previously worked as a clerk for the Courts Administration Authority.

Daniela wrote on LinkedIn after graduating: “I am so proud to announce that I have graduated from the University of South Australia with a Bachelor of Laws (Second class Honours) and Bachelor of Psychology.”

“I look forward to continuing my career in law, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me!

“I am so grateful for my loved ones who have supported me through this journey.”

Ms Vergulis commented on her daughter’s post, signing off as “Mama”.

“I am so proud of you sweetheart,” Ms Vergulis wrote.

“You are brilliant, able and ambitious, an achiever.

“It was a big pleasure seeing you grow and turn into the beautiful young lady, an educated professional that you are today.

“I bless you with all that you need to earn many more achievements and feasts in life ahead and I will always be there to support you.”

A 51-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder over the shooting.

He did not apply for bail and will attend the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police were called to Elm Rd, Campbelltown, about 1.20pm on Saturday after neighbours reported hearing gun shots, and seeing two women collapsed on the driveway of a home.

When patrols arrived, they found Ms Vergulis dead at the scene and Daniela with serious injuries.

Two police vehicles – a van and a patrol car – remained at the Campbelltown address on Sunday to cordon off the area.

Neighbour Tony, who declined to provide his surname, said the shooting was “bizarre”.

“It’s been a pretty horrific 24 hours,” Tony told The Advertiser on Sunday.

He was shocked at the chaos that unfolded in his “sleepy, quiet street”.

“Most people in the street know each other,” he said.

Tony said the the accused man had moved in just before the coronavirus pandemic but was not aware of any issues.

Neighbour Michael Karanastasis said he heard a “bang bang” when the shooting occurred.

Another neighbour, Christine Tabe, said she returned home from the shops on Saturday to the chaotic scene.

“There was a massive police presence so we knew something terrible had happened,” Ms Tabe said.

On Sunday morning, bloodstains could be seen on the driveway next to bloodied shopping bags, with contents including meat and medication spilt nearby.

The shooting unfolded in front of the house where Ms Vergulis was shot dead, before the accused man is alleged to have re-entered the home and barricaded himself inside.

Patrols set up cordons around the home and surrounding streets while STAR Group officers rushed to the scene.

After lengthy negotiations lasting about four hours, Mr Vergulis was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

On Saturday night forensic examiners scoured the scene for evidence, illuminating the street so they could photograph the crime scene.

It was understood officers and detectives were at the scene late into the night examining the area.

Other officers doorknocked nearby houses to interview residents.

SA Health declined to provide a condition update on Daniela due to the ongoing police investigation.
