A woman who allegedly ran over her friend, leaving him in an induced coma has been granted home bail
. Lisa Chapman, 32, of Eyre was granted home detention bail on Wednesday.
She appeared for a third time via video link at Elizabeth Magistrates Court charged with aggravated driving causing serious harm, aggravated recklessly causing serious harm and aggravated acts to endanger life.
Ms Chapman was allegedly “mucking around” with her friend, and says she did not see him before the collision.
The incident from June 5 which left the victim seriously injured was caught on CCTV, showing the white Commodore drive over a 26-year-old man in Chapman’s driveway.
He suffered a fractured neck and chest injuries, but is now in a stable condition.
Police prosecutor John Taliangis gave Magistrate Sale an update to the condition of the victim, saying that he will have to learn to walk again.
Chapman’s lawyer Ms Hanson said that after talking to Chapman on Tuesday, Chapman was unsure why she was moving her car before the incident.
“She was unsure whether she was moving her vehicle so he couldn’t move his or so his car could fit in the driveway,” Ms Hanson said.
“She recalls him being in front of the vehicle but thought he had moved away, the car had frosted over front windows and a significant blind spot from passenger pillar.”
“After she accelerated over and realised what happened she rendered first aid assistance immediately, all of the aftermath behaviour is consistent with the fact that she didn’t intentionally drive over this man.”
Magistrate Sale said he was troubled by the explanation that Chapman hadn’t seen the victim before driving over him.
“I struggle that she didn’t see the very tall man, in the CCTV, you see him place his hands on the bonnet of the car before she moves forward as if to make clear to him that she wants him to get out of the way,” he said.
“Once she hits him the bonnet rises significantly and she continues over him with the rear axle of the car, I also struggle with her lack of recollection it only happened 11 days ago, she wasn’t heavily intoxicated.”
“There’s a genuine issue to be tried in a higher jurisdiction than where I sit.”
Chapman was granted bail on home detention with the mother of two set to reappear at court on December 15 at the Adelaide Magistrates Court.
JUNE 10: A second bail hearing was adjourned on Thursday a woman, who was driving a car which ran over her friend north of Adelaide last week, leaving him in an induced coma.
Lisa Chapman, 32, of Eyre, says she did not see her friend before the collision.
The incident from June 5 which left the victim in an induced coma was caught on CCTV, showing the white Commodore drive over the 26-year-old man.
He suffered a fractured neck and chest injuries, but is now in a stable condition.
Chapman’s lawyer Sari Kedler told Magistrate Ben Sale that Chapman’s incarceration was causing stress on her partner and two sons aged one and six.
“Since she has been in custody her partner has had to become the primary carer of the kids, if she is to stay in custody any longer they will face financial difficulty as he will become unemployed,” Mr Kedler said
Magistrate Sale said he was concerned with the opposing versions of events put to him at the last bail hearing.
“There was clearly something happening between Chapman and the victim before the incident, why was he trying to prevent her from leaving,” he said.
“He had his palms on the vehicle shortly before he laid down in front.
“She runs over him not only in the front axle of the car, but the rear axle, with the car visibly moving upon driving over him.
“I struggle with the submission that she just didn’t know he was there, he will suffer lifelong injuries and so far we have no explanation.”
Mr Kedler said Ms Chapman’s partner wad been intoxicated at the time of the incident and could not offer an explanation for the events leading up to the incident.
Chapman will face court again on Wednesday.
EARLIER: A woman has been caught on CCTV “recklessly” driving her car over a long-time friend as he lay on the ground in the driveway of her home, a court heard.
The 26-year-old victim, who suffered a fractured neck and chest injuries, has been placed in an induced coma in the Royal Adelaide Hospital and may never walk again.
Lisa Chapman, from Eyre, appeared via video-link in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday charged with aggravated driving causing serious harm, aggravated recklessly causing serious harm and aggravated acts to endanger life.
Prosecutor John Taliangis said police obtained “high-quality” CCTV footage that shows Chapman, who had a 0.07 blood alcohol reading, getting behind the wheel of her white Commodore at 10.30pm at an Eyre home on June 5.
“The footage shows the defendant in the car as the victim leans on the bonnet with his head to the driver’s side and legs to the passenger side.
“The defendant then drives over him, stopping with him under the vehicle temporarily before continuing to drive over the victim, dragging him underneath for a few metres,” Mr Taliangis told the court.
Chapman’s solicitor Natalie Brown said Chapman had not seen the victim.
“She felt a bump and swerved and she didn‘t see him lying down at all, they were mucking around with the cars,” Ms Brown said.
Ms Brown said Chapman has no prior history.
Magistrate Ben Sale said that the versions of Saturday’s events were significantly different and that he wants to look at principle evidence before making a decision on bail.
Chapman will appear in court again on Thursday.
