One of the men arrested in statewide raid on alleged violent extremists was caught in possession of the Christchurch Massacre video, court documents allege.
The Advertiser can reveal Justin Robert Bassett stands accused of having a copy of the video – which is no longer available on the mainstream internet – on one or more of his electronic devices.
He is the second South Australian to face court in the past two weeks charged with the offence.
Earlier this month, Bennett Russell Maynard-Brown, 32, of Glenelg East, also fronted court on the charge – but he insisted it was a mistake, and that he has since converted to Islam.
Bassett, 28, of Surrey Downs, has yet to plead to one count of having possession of extremist material.
He was one of two people arrested in April when SA Police searched several properties as part of an investigation into “ideologically motivated violent extremism”.
Patrick Patmore, 32, of Salisbury East, was also arrested and charged with offences including possessing and taking steps to manufacture an explosive device and prohibited weapons.
Following the raids, Thomas Sewell – leader of neo-Nazi extremist group The National Socialist Network – posted a video to the Telegram app.
He reportedly said the arrests “won’t slow us down” and that “a lot of fun activities” were being planned in Adelaide in the coming weeks.
Sewell was himself charged, in March, over an alleged assault on a Channel 9 security guard.
Police, meanwhile, said the investigation is ongoing and there has been no known threat to the public or any person.
On Tuesday, counsel for Bassett asked for further time to negotiate with prosecutors.
Magistrate Karim Soetratma remanded Basset on continuing bail to face court again in August.
Bassett left court wearing sunglasses and a disposable Covid mask.
