High on amphetamines and prescription meds, he stabbed a complete stranger at a bus stop. Now this teenager’s victim is “consumed by fear”.

The victim of a near-fatal, unprovoked stabbing at the Noarlunga Centre bus interchange in September 2023 is now “consumed by fear” and “constantly on edge”, as he confronted his teen attacker in court.

Jayden James Spakianos, 19, appeared in the District Court for sentencing submissions on Friday after admitting to stabbing Scott Wimshurst, 26, in the back and leaving him with a punctured and collapsed lung. In January, Spakianos pleaded guilty to aggravated causing serious harm to another with intent.

Mr Wimshurst, whose victim impact statement was read to the court by prosecution, said his “entire life was altered” after the attack.

“Now, the mere idea of catching a bus, train or even stepping foot near the bus interchange where it happened fills me with paralysing fear and anxiety – causing me to suffer horrible panic attacks,” Mr Wimshurst, from Hackham, wrote.

“This traumatic event has ripped into every other aspect of my existence.

“Your reckless actions have left me grappling with profound pain and suffering that extends far beyond physical wounds. The trauma you inflicted has shattered my sense of security – making me constantly fear for my safety and wellbeing.

“No individual should be forced to endure the trauma and suffering that I have experienced as a result of this senseless crime.”

The court heard Spakianos was on bail at the time of the offending after an aggravated assault, which occurred three weeks before he stabbed Mr Wimshurst. He pleaded guilty to using a screwdriver to attack a Dan Murphy’s security guard.

It was further submitted by prosecution that after Spakianos stabbed Mr Wimshurst, he walked away laughing.

Kassandra Girolamo, for Spakianos, told Judge Joanne Tracey her client was “extremely remorseful and regretful”, and submitted he was only armed with a knife “for self defence”.

“That paranoia in my submission is very closely connected with the substance use that Mr Spakianos was under the influence of at the time of this offending and prior to this offending.

“There had been, on my instructions, a number of days where Mr Spakianos had continued the use of both alcohol, amphetamines (and) prescription medication. At the time of this offending, he was under the influence of all of those.

“He was so intoxicated he has very little recollection of what occurred.”

Spakianos will appear in court next year for sentencing.
