A father accused of stabbing his daughter in an “attempted honour killing” says he will confess to a lesser charge – so long as the rest of his family is released from jail.

On Thursday, counsel for the father, 57, said they were seeking to broker a plea bargain over the stabbing, allegedly motivated by the daughter falling in love with a Christian man.

However, they said that was conditional on prosecutors accepting a confession to a less serious charge than attempted murder.

“An offer has been put, to the prosecution, to resolve the matter as (an incident of) aggravated causing serious harm with intent to do so,” they said.

“That’s put on the basis prosecutors consider withdrawing charges of attempted murder against all other persons accused in this matter.”

The father, 57, mother, 56, brother, 31, sister, 29, and brother-in-law, 29, have yet to plead to one count each of attempted murder.

The brother and a second brother are further charged with aggravated counts of serious criminal trespass and assaulting a person while using a weapon.

Prosecutors allege that, when the victim’s relationship became known to the family, the mother and brothers went to a house they believed was occupied by the boyfriend.

They allege that, while the mother waited outside, the brothers broke in and assaulted the occupant with knuckledusters, yelling “we are looking for our sister”.

They further allege the woman subsequently agreed to meet her mother at the shopping centre to collect some books and that the father then attacked her with a knife.

They have told the court the woman suffered life-threatening injuries and nearly died because her mother and sister took her home and put her in a shower rather than seeking medical attention.

They further allege that, while the woman recovered from the “attempted honour killing” in hospital, all but 17 cents were drained from her bank account.

On Thursday, prosecutors said they had yet to consider the father’s proposed plea bargain, and would require time to do so.

Magistrate Brett Dixon adjourned the case until June.
