An elite squash player said her life has been ruined after she was glassed in a horrific pub assault.

Her attacker, Vincent De Paul Corey Matthews-Rudolph, 36, was jailed after CCTV footage revealed the shocking incident.

During sentencing, the District Court heard the victim was having drinks with friends at the Westland Hotel in Whyalla on July 23, 2022.

She saw Matthews-Rudolph arguing with another male and walked over to him to try and calm the situation down.

CCTV footage released to The Advertiser shows Matthews-Rudolph holding a glass, which he swings towards the victim.

The actual impact of the glass hitting her is not shown in the footage, before Matthews-Rudolph is pushed away by other patrons.

The court heard the victim instantly felt excruciating pain and her eye started bleeding.

She was flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for treatment, having suffered several lacerations to and around her eyes.

“This has caused ongoing disfigurement and reduction in function,” Judge Joanne Tracey said.

Matthews-Rudolph, of Mullaquana, was found guilty by a jury of recklessly causing serious harm after a trial.

The jury accepted that Matthews-Rudolph did not think the glass was in his hand at the time of the offence and found the aggravating feature of the charge was not made out.

The court heard the offending has had a life changing effect on the victim who continues to have issues with double vision and headaches.

“She played squash for Australia and New South Wales before the incident and has not been able to do so since,” Judge Tracey said.

“She is still suffering the indignity of people asking what happened to her, and she continues to experience nightmares.

“She says her life has been ruined.”

The court heard Matthews-Rudolph was drinking with his colleagues on the night of the offending and was “truly mortified” for what happened.

The court heard Matthews-Rudolph, who was born in New Zealand, came to Australia in his early twenties for work.

Judge Tracey sentenced Matthews-Rudolph to two years and 11 months jail, with a non-parole period of 18 months.

“No doubt you were affected by alcohol and I accept that you were in a crowded and somewhat chaotic environment, but you exhibited a total loss of self-control,” she said.
