Family of Jasmeen Kaur claim her murderer Tarikjot Singh tried to ‘forcefully marry her’

A young man who kidnapped and murdered a student nurse and buried her in a shallow grave had been rejected by her a “hundred times”, a court has heard.

A young man who kidnapped and murdered a nursing student was trying to “forcefully marry” her and had been rejected a “hundred times”, the victim’s family have claimed.

Jasmeen Kaur, 21, was taken from her workplace in North Plympton by Tarikjot Singh, 21, in the evening of March 5, 2021.

She was driven north several hours and murdered sometime between March 5 and 7 before being buried in a shallow grave by Singh near Hawker.

Singh initially pleaded not guilty to murder but finally admitted his crimes in the Supreme Court in February this year.

On Friday, Carmen Matteo SC, prosecuting, read a victim impact statement compiled by Ms Kaur’s family to the court.

Ms Kaur’s mother Rashpaul Kaur travelled from India to attend the hearing.

“Jasmeen is gone and I am broken-hearted, she was my precious little girl,” she wrote.

“I am tormented by the thought of what she endured, I wonder when she realised that she was in mortal danger.

“I wonder what her murderer told her before she died, she was handcuffed and was helpless.”

She wrote that Singh had been rejected by her daughter a “hundred times” and had been “forcefully trying to marry her”.

“Her death leaves a chasm in our life, I can never forgive your for taking Jasmeen away from us,” she said.

Ms Kaur’s brother Sukhmanpreet Singh and sister Gurmanpreet Kaur said the future the three siblings imagined for each other no longer existed.

“You have ruined so many lives, she was frightened and fighting for her life,” they wrote.

“She was so scared and alone in her last moment. We hate that we were not there to protect her and stop you.

“We can never get her back, the last moments of her life play on our mind constantly.”

Ms Kaur’s aunt Ramandeep Kaur told Singh his actions had forever broken the heart of her niece’s family.

“She was planning to visit her family back home (in India) for the first time in years, because of you she went back in a coffin,” she said.

Ms Kaur moved to Australia in 2018 to study nursing. After her disappearance police honed in on Singh who was known to his victim.

Police believed he had been stalking her for weeks before the disappearance. His car was spotted near her workplace on several occasions.

He borrowed another car on the night he abducted Ms Kaur and it was captured on security cameras travelling north before returning south after an 11-hour gap.

Martin Anders, for Singh, asked for further sentencing submissions to be adjourned while a further psychological report was ordered for his client.

Justice Adam Kimber adjourned the case until July.
